Do All Wisdom Teeth Have to Be Removed?
Actually, no. Some patients have enough room on the top or bottom of their mouths to accommodate wisdom teeth. For them, removal of only two wisdom teeth may be required. While it is not uncommon to have two wisdom teeth extracted in one office visit, they can always be extracted one at a time if you prefer. However, please note that some insurance plans will only cover or partially cover wisdom tooth extractions when they are performed at the same time.
What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction Procedure
When you come to Belle Meade Family Dentistry for your tooth extraction procedure, you will be taken to one of our semi-private treatment rooms. There, you will be given the sedation method of your choice. Most patients request a numbing agent followed by at least one local injection. The goal is to make you as comfortable and relaxed as possible.
After the site has been completely numbed, the dentist will start the tooth extraction process. At our office, we utilize high tech lasers and other equipment to remove the wisdom tooth as cleanly as possible, and cause as little trauma to the surrounding hard and soft tissues as we can. When the tooth has been removed, we spend time cleaning the site of the pulled tooth, and usually pack gauze around the site to promote healing. Stitches may or may not be required.
You will be given pharmaceutical medications to take after the extraction if over-the-counter remedies do not work to dull any discomfort. The dentist will see you in a few days to ensure that your body has adjusted to the removal of the tooth, and that the site looks as expected. Within a few weeks, you will forget that you ever had wisdom teeth extracted, and any problems such as soreness will be gone.
